Variation and Change of Upwelling Dynamics Detected in the World’s Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems

چکیده

Global increases in temperature are altering land-sea gradients. Bakun (1990) hypothesized that changes within these gradients will directly affect atmospheric pressure cells associated with the development of winds and consequently impact upwelling patterns ecologically important Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS). In this study we used daily time series NOAA Optimally Interpolated sea surface (SST) ERA 5 reanalysis wind products to calculate a novel metrics related dynamics. We then use objectively describe signals terms their frequency, intensity duration throughout four EBUS during summer months over last 37 years (1982–2019). found decrease (increase) SST is an increase (decrease) number “events,” upwelling, cumulative differences between regions EBUS. The Humboldt Current only shows consistent response from north south general intensification upwelling. However, could not provide clear evidence for dynamics drive

Surface Mixing And Biological Activity In The Four Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems

Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) are characterized by a high productivity of plankton associated with large commercial fisheries, thus playing key biological and socio-economical roles. Since they are populated by several physical oceanic structures such as filaments and eddies, which interact with the biological processes, it is a major challenge to study this suband mesoscale activit...

Comparative Study of Biological Production in Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems Using an Artificial Neural Network

We used a feature selection method to reduce the number of potential drivers and retain only the most important NPP predictors. This was performed using a SOM-based algorithm relying on the SOM topology preserving property. This supplementary material provides the detail of our feature selection algorithm. Two subsets of drivers emerge as the most relevant for explaining NPP variability: those ...

Topographically Induced Upwelling off Eastern Australia

A high-resolution, numerical study of an idealized western boundary current flow over variable topography is presented, with application to the East Australian Current (EAC). The results indicate that alongshelf topographic variations off Australia’s east coast cause the EAC to accelerate over the narrowing continental shelf near Cape Byron. This acceleration is sufficient to hinder the geostro...

Implications of refined altimetry on estimates of mesoscale activity and eddy-driven offshore transport in the Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems

We investigate the extent to which the recently upgraded version of the Ssalto/Duacs sea level anomaly product affects the description of mesoscale activity in the Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS). Drifter observations confirm that the new data set released by Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO) in April 2014 (DT14) offers an enhanced descri...
